United Kingdom Expands Toxic Alcohol Toxicity Alert Roster with Eleven Nations
The UK authorities has placed an additional eleven more countries to its public advisory register regarding the risks of methanol toxicity from contaminated beverages.
This revised advisory covers Bangladesh, India, Iran, Jordan, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Morocco, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, and Rwanda following what officials describe as "an international surge in the number of reported cases" of methanol poisoning.
Only last month, the government had previously added Ecuador, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Russia, and Uganda to the standing register, in response to several notable events such as the tragic death of 6 visitors in Laos in 2024.
Travelers are being cautions that as little as small amounts of industrial alcohol can result in vision loss or fatality within twelve to forty-eight hours.
Exactly what is Toxic Alcohol and How is it Used?
Industrial alcohol is a poisonous substance commonly utilized in antifreeze, car cleaning liquid, and thinner. This substance is not designed for drinking.
Although it is inherently formed during the manufacture of alcoholic drinks, reputable manufacturers reduce it to low, safe levels for drinking through the distillation process.
However in various destinations, it is illegally mixed into beverages to cut costs, and because it is tasteless and scentless, it is very difficult to detect.
Authorities' Guidance for Travellers
Government representative the minister emphasized that all travellers should recognize the signs of toxic alcohol toxicity.
"If you're having drinks abroad, opt for well-known venues and avoid homemade alcohol or complimentary drinks," the official said.
