MHA Voice Actors Reflect on an Heartfelt Last Chapter: 'I am Something of a Weepy Mess'
The beloved anime series My Hero Academia has reached its conclusion, leaving fans with a deep feeling of emotion that extends beyond the story itself. This heroic tale has always been more than a straightforward plot; it's a rite-of-passage story about hope, perseverance, and the true meaning of heroism in a world full of trials. The eighth season drives these core themes to their absolute limit, as Class 1-A confronts the fallout of the Paranormal Liberation Front and a society teetering on the brink of collapse.
For a generation of viewers, the series, which debuted in 2015, served as their gateway to anime. From its explosive debut to its emotional ending, it shaped the art form for nearly a decade. Its conclusion truly marks the end of a chapter. If you find yourself shedding a tear during the final episodes, know that you are in plenty of company. The English dub cast felt those exact emotions, pouring immense heart into their recordings for the last chapters.
Saying Farewell to a Defining Chapter
"It was such a wonderful thing to see this final season weave together all these narrative strands into this huge, heartfelt release for these heroes," stated one actor. "And to be part of that, during that time, portraying the characters, is truly moving."
The challenge of the goodbye isn't just about the storyline. My Hero Academia became a major part in the careers of its performers, and with its conclusion comes the closing of an era they have carried with them for years.
"Just as a person, for whom this has been part of life for the better part of a decade, even if the dialogue I deliver isn’t particularly emotional, if it’s just Ida being himself, every time I wrap recording, I become a weepy mess because it's ending. I’m not ready," admitted another veteran voice actor.
Favorite Moments from the Final Battles
Despite portraying their own iconic roles, several cast members still have personal favorite characters beyond their roles, figures whose personal journeys affected them just as hard on an emotional level.
"What that’s surprised me so far in my watching of the last episodes is how many characters are making me cry," said one actor. "Be it All Might’s fight at the very beginning of this season, Aizawa, [even] the Shining Hero made me tear up this season!"
The actors behind the sibling hero-and-villain duo were also caught up in the tragedy of their complex relationship, especially during the siblings' clashes across the final chapters.
A Powerful Moment
"Recently, a castmate said something as his character that, really, if you took it out of context, it’s a nothingburger, it shouldn’t do anything, but he poses a question to his sibling a inquiry, and the way it was delivered was so authentic and beautiful," recalled one actor. "It influenced the performance I gave. I love my colleagues, they’re so talented at this, and I cannot stress enough that I’m so lucky."
Another actor echoed the sentiment, clarifying that the apparently minor line originates from a brief, lighthearted moment introduced earlier, one that is completed in the ending and carries immense dramatic impact.
"Fast-forward to the final season, when they’re meeting, and [the character] says, 'Wait, I need more time'," the actor explained. "Yeah, it was just a way to try to reach out. It was just a question, but within the story, it's everything. It's affection, acceptance, remorse..."
"... and regret," finished the other, voice thick with emotion. "Those boys ought to have had the chance to speak like that."
