Debunking Venezuelan Celebration Videos and AI-Generated Pictures of Nicolás Maduro.
AI-generated pictures purporting to portray Nicolás Maduro in custody following his capture by the US have gained countless of views on social media.
How AI Images of the President Appeared Soon After
Initial inauthentic synthetic picture seemingly displaying him being escorted off a aircraft emerged a brief time later. The graphic was not shared any verified US channels; rather, it was published on X by an profile purporting to be an “enthusiast of AI-generated art”.
We’ve checked Google’s SynthID, which found the image was generated or edited with Google AI.
Additional synthetic pictures were disseminated in the subsequent hours, purporting to present more angles of Maduro detained. Noticeable logos on the graphics show they originated from an Instagram profile named ultravfx.
SynthID says the further pictures were also created or altered generative models.
Authentic Image Posted but Fakes Persisted
Donald Trump shared the first real photo of Maduro restrained aboard the US Navy ship on Saturday morning. However, despite this real photo was made public, AI-generated pictures persisted online but were altered to incorporate the grey athletic wear seen on Maduro.
Digital forensics indicate these altered fabrications were initially shared on TikTok by a digital art account. Again, analysis says these further images were created or altered AI tools.
